After spending a year abroad Sony's PS Vita based micro-console is spreading its wings and coming to the US and Europe. The micro-console looks to directly compete against Amazon's Fire TV and the Apple TV by emphasizing a better gaming experience than either can provide. The device does this in 3 ways. Plays PS Vita games (over 900 games including PS1 and PS2 classics), connects to the PlayStation Now service to play PS3 games, and can "Remote Play" to your PS4 to play your PS4 games on a secondary TV.
At the $99.99 price tag the system seems like a bargain just to be able to play the PS4 in multiple rooms, but to make it viable as a stand alone platform Sony really needs to beef up their streaming TV service offerings and ensure there's more PS Vita games on offer.
Once Sony releases either its new linear TV service or they start getting more services like HBOGo, Starz, ESPN, Showtime and the like on the device then the micro-console will start looking like a viable standalone purchase and a powerhouse contender against Apple TV or Amazon's Fire TV. Until then its an awesome peripheral for your newly purchased PS4 with a lot of potential of it's own.
PlayStation TV will be available this fall.
