Nintendo Jumps into the Toys to Games Craze with Amiibo

If there was one publisher that could benefit from the Skylanders/Disney Infinity Toys to Game Model it's Nintendo and they've done just that. Introducing amiibo, figures that when touched to the Wii U Gamepad or the 3DS amiibo portal your toy comes to life in game.

Each game will incorporate amiibo differently with Super Smash Brothers Wii U being the first game to be compatible. In Smash Bros your amiibo is more like an AI companion. You don't control the amiibo directly rather you play along side or against it. The amiibo will learn and grow as you use it. All that knowledge and growth will be saved in the amiibo figure so that when you go to a friends house to play you don't lose a thing.

With it's list of 719 characters I can't think of any other franchise that is set to take advantage of the amiibo platform more than Game Freak's very popular Pokemon series. It would be a tremendously huge missed opportunity if the next major release of Pokemon was not a dual platform game, meaning released on both the Wii U and on the 3DS, and doesn't take advantage of the amiibo figures platform. As the platform grows lets see where Nintendo takes this.

Amiibo is set to launch this fall with 14 figures and the figures look great!

From the Manufacturer:

Introducing amiibo™: character figurines designed to connect and interact with compatible games. By holding the amiibo over your Wii U GamePad, you'll open up new experiences within each corresponding game.

Your amiibo will store data as you play, making it your very own, one-of-a-kind amiibo.
